FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects the privacy of student education records. Boom Cards complies with FERPA ensuring the protection of student education records. Teachers using Boom Cards are in charge of ensuring that there is no unauthorized sharing of student data.

COPPA: The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act ensures that students under 13 are protected from unauthorized data collection. Boom Cards complies with COPPA by requiring consent from parents or guardians for collecting personal information from students under 13.

Introduction

Technology is used in schools for a variety of reasons. Teaching students and staff how to use technology ethically, legally, and safely can lead to optimized learning. This infographic is designed to inform teachers how useful educational tools like Boom Cards can be used in instruction ethically, legally, and safely by adhering to FERPA and COPPA regulations. This poster outlines key policies and practices that ensure a secure and responsible learning environment.

Acceptable Use Policy

Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) outline the appropriate use of technology by students and staff. Both Morton West High School and Boom Cards have comprehensive AUPs that ensure that students and staff will use technology responsibly

Safe and Ethical Use

Copyright and Intellectual Property Law: Educational professionals are required to abide by copyright laws when using and creating content. When creating Boom Cards, professionals need to use media and other materials that are licensed and properly cite sources. Users cannot share materials from other creators when using Boom Cards unless it states that in the creator's AUP. Data: Student data in the Boom Cards platform needs to be stored and shared securely only with the appropriate people. Accessibility: Boom Cards is an accessible platform that allows for interactive use. Paired with the assistive technology at Morton West High School, using Boom Cards complies with ADA regulations.
