My grandparents lived in a small, one-story house backing the dog track in Commerce City, Colorado. Upon looking at the place, you would never know that heaven grew in their backyard. For years, they operated a greenhouse; magic sprouted from their fingertips. Grandma and grandpa Valdez were proud of their breathtaking garden. As a little girl, I reveled in its peaceful iridescence. I can still hear the fur-cloaked call of the bumble bees; I clearly see the giant yellow dahlias towering over a harmonious stream of marigolds, daisies, pansies, and zinnias. I remember deep conversations with my snapdragon friends. The forest-green grass tickled my shins while I grazed my fingertips across intricately placed stones leading from one color oasis to the next. There was something other-worldly about how they curated such radiance, such dignified regard within the confines of a single space. All that beauty living and thriving side-by-side in love and interconnectedness. Can you imagine? Gardens can connect us to our family and, as Robin Wall Kimmerer clarifies, our natural kin; planting and tending lead to interconnected well-being.
