With over 500 photographs on display, this multimedia exhibit includes only a fraction of Abraham Ferrer’s immense contributions to Visual Communications and his documentation of Los Angeles history. Abe is a living legend whose work has been quietly woven into the very fabric of the Asian Pacific American community he has served so tirelessly. The creator of a significant portion of VC’s Photographic Archive, Abe’s work captures numerous cultural and community events that provide a blueprint to understanding the larger stories contained in Visual Communications’ own history of documenting the Asian American and Pacific Islander story. Abe AF: The Brain Behind the Beret offers a glimpse into the mind and vision of Abe Ferrer—a storyteller whose work has captured the heart of a movement and whose legacy continues to shape and inspire generations. Through this collection of photographs, interviews, film clips, and even Abe’s own short film “Tough Talk” from VC’s Filmmaker Development Program, visitors will experience not only Abe’s remarkable artistic contributions, but also his deep commitment to documenting and uplifting communities through the power of visual storytelling. This collection, like its namesake, contains dozens upon dozens of stories, reiterating the bold spirit of Abe Ferrer.
This interactive, digital gallery features the entirety of the exhibit's photos carefully curated by Abe, taken by the photographer himself during his 40+ year career. Each photo is accompanied by a description written by Abe using his unique voice—not only providing context to his work but also candid, outspoken takes on his subjects.
