Under the administrations of Nicolás Maduro and Hugo Chávez (1999–2013), the government has consolidated authority more and more in the executive branch. The weakening of checks and balances, electoral tampering, repression of political opposition, and control over vital institutions like the military and the courts have all been indicators of this. The reality is that the pgovernment functions with little accountability or transparency, even in the face of a constitution that protects democratic freedoms. Charges of economic mismanagement and violations of human rights serve to emphasize the authoritarian character of the current administration.
