Examples:-My mom is cooking rice-He is not doing anything
Use: Serves to express events or states that happened in the distant or near past
Structure: Subject + -ed + complement
Examples: -We didn't have any money-They weren't in Rios last summer.

Use: Express actions or states that were taking place in the past when another action or state interrupts them
Structure: Subject + auxiliar verb (to be) + gerund (ing) + complement
Examples:-I was enjoying my classes-We were having our first son
