Digital Literacy & Source Evaluation

start

Introduction

You arrived at school a little early and decided to stop by the library to work on some assignments before class. Little did you know that when the door closed behind you on the way in, it had locked, trapping you inside. Will you make it to class on time, or be stuck in the library until someone comes to get you?

Domain Credibility

Escape

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ESCAPED! Now fill out the completition survey.

Many teachers have likely told you that Wikipedia should not be used for sources. While that can be the case as many of the pages can be publically edited, certain pages are protected or restricted access to prevent misinformation. You can also use Wikipedia as a tool to find sources, as they list their works cited at the bottom of the topic's page. BOOKS at the LIBRARY can also be helpful resources. Be mindful but not reliant on the domain. Just because a domain uses .edu or .gov does not allways indicate credibility or validity.

Temporary Printer Code
  • To learn the printer code, you must sort tips for simple source evaluation.
  • Move the Concepts (which are labeled 1, 2, & 3) to match the definitions to get the code in order on the right side.

1. Lateral Reading

The domain can help you find good sources, but it is not always the best indicator for credibility..gov, .com, .org, .edu, etc.

2. Verifying Claims

Go outside of the source you are reading; look up source & verify it is credible & accurate information

3. Using Internet Resources Wisely

Check for citationsUse fact checkers: snopes, factcheck, politifact, washingtonpostfactchecker

One vs Multiple Sources

Don't pull all of your information from one source, unless required or necessary. It is beneficial for you to use multiple sources to paint a bigger and more accurate picture.

Helpful Literary Resources
  • Online/Physical (School) Library
  • Google Scholar
  • Citation Manuals (Ex: OwlPurdue)
    • MLA
    • APA
    • Chicago
    • IEEE
    • AMA
  • Other sources can be helpful and/or beneficial, but you need to verify their reliability & credibility

Time:

Don't Plagarize

Be ethical. You have an obligation as a student to give credit where credit is due. If you use someone else's words, rephrased or quoted, you MUST cite them. Often, you must cite your source in the Works Cited/References section and in-text. If AI is involved, its use should only be as a tool to support your writing and other skills; it should not do the work for you.

Welcome!

We'll be right back...
