Flatlandia è un mondo bidimensionale abitato da figure geometriche. Il protagonista, A. Square, un quadrato, vive esperienze innovative incontrando, in primo luogo, una retta da Linelandia, mondo unidimensionale,abitato da quest'ultima e punti. In seguito la sua conoscienza viene ampliata dall'incontro con una sfera, abitante di Spacelandia, mondo a tre dimensioni. A seguire il quadrato ipotizza la presenza di ulteriori dimensioni, seppur l'idea sia inconcepibile persino dalla sfera. Infine al ritorno del protagonista a Flatlandia, egli cerca di condividere le nuove idee, per cui viene condannato e imprigionato per eresia.

Infine il protagonista torna finalmente a Flatlandia, ma con una nuova consapevolezza, dimostrare l'esistenza, da lui già appurata, della terza dimensione, e superandosi dimostrando l'esistenza anche di una quarta. Inizia a riflettere da idee a lui vicine; pensando che il quadrato sia un'estensione bidimensionale della retta, ed allo stesso modo la sfera lo è trdimensionalmente per il cerchio,ed ipotizzando che si possa eseguire lo stesso ragionamento per figure di maggiori dimensioni. Proseguendo i suoi studi, ed iniziando ad esporre le proprie tesi A. Square convince una parte della popolazione di Flatlandia, che inizia a sostenerlo nell'ulteriore ricerca. Nel corso degli anni il quadrato viene ritenuto uno dei maggiori esponenti fisici e matematici di Flatlandia e non solo, avendo fornito un'intuizione fondamentale che ha permesso di superare i limiti creduti fino a quel momento.
