The Characters

The story takes place in the small village of Hollybrook in the cold month of December. The protagonist Helen returns home after school and finds a new painting of a woman bought by her mother in the house, that makes her faints because the potrait looks exactly like her.

Chapter One

It’s Helen’s birthday and her mum wakes her up with a lot of presents. Among them there is also a gold necklace engraved with a large red ruby, from an unknown aunt Charlotte, sister of her grandmother.

Chapter Two

Chapter Three

Helen and her cousin Will start to investigate about the strange potrait and the necklace in the junk shop where Helen’ mum bought the painting. In there they find Mrs. Milsted( Helen neighbour) and two strange men that look familiar to Helen.

Helen and Will are confused by the two men that they met in the junk shop so they try to talk about it in a coffee shop. When Helen comes home she find her mum hanging holly garlands around the windows, and talking to her in a strange and cold way. After doing that Helen’s mother goes to the village so she remains alone, until Mrs. Milsted ring to her door asking her something strange.

Chapter four

A few days later Will goes to Helen house and tells her about his discovery: apparently aunt Charlotte died in an accident thirty years ago, because of the hollybrook curse, that is about witches. Helen tries to find other things among some old photos of her grandma and her sisters: she understands that they have something to do with the witches and with the two men in the junk shop.

Will stops at his house to take some money and find his mom talking with a woman of the village( really strange because she wasnt from of Hollybrook and no one talked to her). He buys the book and find a chapter about the hollybrook curse. They find out that Helen is going to be part of the witches of the village!

Chapter Seven

Helen tells Julia that she’ll go to the village meeting. Uncle Jo tells Helen and Will that Helen must become a witch, her father before he died, tried to stop the curse but it wasn’t possible only helen couls do it. So Will and Helen go to the meeting and try to find the special object that will stop the curse.

Chapter Eight

In the big circle of the village's women there are also the two men of the junk shop. All of them were waiting for her and as she comes they start. Helen in a moment of confusion trow the ruby in the firestone , but nothing happens until she finds the special object and finally saves the women from the curse.
