- Love and Obsession: Erik's love for Christine is twisted into an obsession that leads him to commit extreme acts. - Beauty and Monstrosity: The novel explores the theme of superficial judgment based on appearance and the dichotomy between external beauty and internal deformities. - Art and Cursed Genius: Erik is a symbol of creative genius unrecognized and persecuted by society because of his appearance.
Christine becomes a star thanks to Erik’s secret guidance, but her success is accompanied by mysterious incidents orchestrated by the Phantom.
A young viscount in love with Christine. He is the antithesis of Erik, representing light and genuine love. Raoul tries to save Christine from the clutches of the Phantom and free her from his control.
Erik lives hidden beneath the Opera and manipulates events to get close to Christine, posing as the “Angel of Music”.
A mysterious and brilliant musician who lives in the basement of the Paris Opera. Deformed since birth, Erik is a tormented man, capable of great love and terrible acts of revenge. He is in love with Christine and will do anything to win her.
Erik kidnaps Christine and takes her to his dungeons, forcing her to choose between marrying him or watching Raoul die. .
The novel is set mainly inside the majestic Paris Opera House, a labyrinthine place made of luxurious boxes, mysterious underground passages and dark secret lakes. The theater itself becomes a character, reflecting the dualism between beauty and darkness.
Erik frees Christine in the end, moved by her compassion and her kiss. He dies alone, giving up love for Christine’s sake.
Christine is torn between her love for Raoul and Erik’s influence, who holds her captive in a game of fear and fascination.
