The Virginia-class submarines are the workhorses of the U.S. Navy’s undersea fleet. The US Navy’s latest class of advanced capability nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines, replacing the ageing fleet of Los Angeles-class attack submarines. Electric Boat and partner Huntington-Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS) share construction of Virginia-class submarines in a teaming agreement and together have delivered 22 Virginia-class ships since 2004.These nuclear-powered submarines are equipped with the latest stealth, intelligence gathering, and weapons systems. They can operate in both deep waters and coastal environments. Virginia-class submarines are highly versatile and capable of executing a variety of critical missions, including anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, and surveillance.

The Columbia-class submarines represent the future of the U.S. Navy’s ballistic missile submarine force. These submarines are designed to replace the aging Ohio-class, serving as a cornerstone of the United States’ nuclear deterrent for decades to come. With a focus on survivability, stealth, and operational availability, Columbia-class submarines will carry a significant portion of the nation’s strategic weapons.Electric Boat is the prime contractor on the design and construction of the 12-ship Columbia class and will perform about 78% of the construction. Huntington-Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia is handling the remaining workload focused on construction of the bow and stern.Arguably the most complex machines ever made, submarines of the Columbia class will be the largest ever built by the United States at two-and-a-half times the size of the existing Virginia-class attack submarines. The Columbia class represents an evolution of submarine technology. Ships of the class will have a life-of-ship reactor, eliminating the need for refueling and making each ship more cost-effective to operate while maximizing time of deployment. Superior acoustical performance and state-of-the-art sensors make the Columbia class the quietest, stealthiest and most capable submarines ever built. When fully deployed, the Columbia class will carry 70% of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Seawolf-class submarines are the world's fastest, quietest, most heavily armed undersea vessels. Seawolf submarines provide the U.S. Navy with undersea weapons platforms that can operate in any scenario against any threat, with mission and growth capabilities that far exceed Los Angeles-class submarines. The robust design of the Seawolf class enables these submarines to perform a wide spectrum of crucial military assignments - from underneath the Arctic icepack to littoral regions anywhere in the world. These submarines represent the pinnacle of engineering and innovation at Electric Boat. As you can see, different classes of submarine often replace an existing class - innovation and continuous improvement is a key aspect of submarine manufacturing. In the near future, priorities include the replacement of the Ohio class submarines, which reach the end of their service life in 2027, and developments in nuclear submarine technology. This will look at integrating new technologies to meet future missions and drive down costs, break technological barriers, and develop concepts for submarines that combine affordability with unmatched capability. As you explore careers at Electric Boat, consider the immense responsibility and pride that comes with contributing to the development of these incredible vessels. Whether you’re involved in their design, construction, or maintenance, you’ll be part of a team that’s shaping the future of underwater defense.
