Building a nuclear submarine - in connection to everything alongside it - doesn’t just happen because of one role. In fact, the work that General Dynamics Electric Boat does is the result of a collective effort, and as a consequence, you’ll find several different areas of the business all play their part. As a result, General Dynamics Electric Boat offers a wide range of career opportunities across several key areas. The future of US submarine manufacturing lies in a combination of skillsets and expertise.

Each area plays a crucial role in the submarine manufacturing process. While this section provides a broad overview, we’ll explore further into different roles, their skills, and responsibilities, throughout the other modules.
In this section, you’ll get a snapshot of the different business areas within the company, including:
Manufacturing and trades are at the heart of General Dynamics Electric Boat’s operations, playing a crucial role in the creation and assembly of submarines. This area encompasses a wide range of skilled professions, from machinists and welders to electricians and pipefitters. Each trade contributes to the intricate process of building some of the world's most advanced and capable submarines. The manufacturing and trades sector at Electric Boat involves the hands-on work necessary to bring submarine designs to life. This includes the fabrication, assembly, installation, and testing of submarine components, systems, and structures. Workers in these roles ensure that every piece of equipment meets the highest standards of quality and precision, as submarines operate in some of the most challenging environments on the planet.
While these roles might not physically help manufacture the submarine, they’re integral to the operation. As with most successful companies, in addition to the employees who support the company's products, a large number of employees support the company's day-to-day operations and ensure the infrastructure required to produce the world's most complicated machines operate as well as the submarines themselves. Business support and professional roles, such as management, human resources, and finance, ensure smooth operations and strategic planning.
These teams drive the design, consideration, and technological advancements in submarine construction. However, they have slightly different functions.Engineers are tasked with some simple questions that require complex solutions. How do you create a vessel that survives the ocean’s crushing depths and freezing temperatures? How do you ensure it doesn’t need refuelling during its entire service life or is virtually silent? Engineers at Electric Boat are world-class and ensure that these challenges can be overcome to create the best quality submarines in existence.Designers at Electric Boat are responsible for devising some of the most complex ships ever to go to sea. Using state-of-the-art computer systems, these roles support ship design from concept to detailed design, construction, and life cycle support. They ensure designs meet product specifications, affordability, and quality requirements, while keeping operation requirements in mind, too.
