AS WE GO...
Prepare a piece of paper with two columns, as such. Try to identify which pronunciation (British English or American English) you feel more comfortable with, as you practice repeating the various phonems.
UK
US
i : X
əʊ X
a: X
Vowels = Les voyelles
Keep in mind that generally-speaking, British English will insist a bit more on long vowels.
Short vowels [ɪ ] = defend [ i ] = jersey [ ʊ ] = rules (UK) [ ɒ ] = ball (UK) - block (UK) [ ʌ ] = cup [ æ ] = attack [ ə ] = competitor [ e ] = bench
Long vowels [ i : ] = team [ u : ] = exclude, rules (US) [ ɔː ] = warning [ ɜː ] = shirt [ ɑː ] = partner, ball (US), block (US)
Diphthongs = Les diphtongues
[ aɪ ] = direct[ eɪ ] = fake, game[ ɔɪ ] = voice[ ɔ ʊ ] = rowing, to blow the whistle (US)[ aʊ ] = to disallow a goal, rebound[ ɪə ] = clear[ əʊ ] = rowing, to blow the whistle (UK)
Consonants = Les consonnes
Remember to always pronounce these letters: - the plural -s (les -s du pluriel: on doit entendre soit un s comme dans " si " ou un z comme dans " zoo"). - the h at the beginning of a word (prononcez toujours votre -h en début de mot). There are only a few exceptions: hour, heir, honor, herb, homage, and honest. - Be careful about your -th (essayez de faire attention à la prononciation du th-)
How to pronounce the -ED
There are 3 ways to pronounce the -ED at the end of a verbal form. Keep in mind that the one that French people tend to use most often is actually the one that you should use the least! (3 façons de prononcer le -ED à la fin d'une forme verbale ; celle que les Français ont le plus tendance à utiliser est en fait celle qu'on devrait utiliser le moins souvent !) ED = [ id ] OR [ t ] OR [ d ] The pronunciation will depend on the sound that comes before the -ED in the word (La prononciation dépendra du son qui précède le -ED dans le mot).
How to pronounce the -ED
1) -ED is pronounced [ id ] when the sound that comes before is a [ d ] or a [ t ]. On prononce le -ED avec un son [ id ] lorsque le dernier son de la base verbale est un [ d ] ou un [ t ]. Ex: need => needed / consult => consulted
How to pronounce the -ED
2) -ED is pronounced [ t ] when the sound that comes before is a [ f ] / [ k ] / [ p ] / [ s ] / [ tch ] or [ ch ]. On prononce le -ED avec un son [ t ] lorsque le dernier son de la base verbale est un [ f ] / [ k ] / [ p ] / [ s ] / [ tch ] or [ ch ].Ex: bluff => bluffed / look => looked / help => helped / pass => passed / watch => watched / push => pushed
How to pronounce the -ED
3) -ED is pronounced [ d ] when the sound that comes before is any other sound. Pour tout autre son précédant le -ED dans la base verbale, la prononciation sera un [ d ]. Ex: kill => killed / claim => claimed / happen => happened / live => lived / enjoy => enjoyed / imply => implied / organize => organized /
How to pronounce the -ED
Exercise correction: - ED with an [ id ] sound: end - ED with a [ t ] sound: check ; skip ; blush ; stress - ED with a [ d ] sound: analyze ; figure ; study
A few tips to improve your accent
Essayez de connaître vos règles d'accentuation (cela vient en s'entraînant régulièrement à parler anglais...) Pour revoir les règles, cliquez ici : Et n'oubliez pas de consulter le site "Howjsay" pour écouter un mot lorsque vous avez un doute sur sa prononciation !
Let's play a board game to practice!
=> Get into teams of 4 students to play this game. 1) Roll the dice (= Roulez le dé) and see where you will land on the board. 2) 1 student on the team gets 10 seconds to find a sports-related word beginning with the phonem that is written on the square you have landed on (= 1 étudiant de l'équipe a 10 secondes pour trouver un mot lié au sport qui commence par le phonème sur lequel vous êtes tombés). BE CAREFUL as we go: you cannot give a word that has already been given by another team, so listen up!
Thanks!
