Placement Testing
It is possible to get accommodations for your placement testing. Follow these steps to get the necessary accommodations.
- Register with SDS atleast TWO WEEKS prior to your placement test
- Be sure to check off the box that says this is specifically for placement testing
- We will process your request as quickly as possible
- There will be two emails to look out for
- An RT Ticket that confirm placement testing has recieved our email
- A second email within 48 hours explaining how to access your accommodated test
- Any follow up questions should be sent to placement@umbc.edu

Note Taking
There are two kinds of Note Taking accommodations that are availablie; Audio Note Taker Software and Peer Note taker.
- You must be approved for note taking accommodations to be able to use either
- Most students are approved for audio note-taking software.
- Peer note takers can only be assigned after the semester request has been submitted
Otter.ai will be the primary note-taking application for students.
- Otter.ai is used to record audio, import audio files, and generate transcripts too
- It also features speaker identification, keyword generation, and enables collaboration on transcripts

Below is the list of our most common accommodations. Accommodations are assigned by a case by case basis.

Alt. Text Format Request
You can get access to have text in different forms. The most common of which is digitally but you can also get it in braille and audio. Most of these alternate formats require technology to be used.
- Must be approved for the accommodation and enrolled for the class you want to use this for
- First check the bookstore website to find what texts are needed for the course youre registered with
- Then check if the textbook is a part of the CMI or in digital format on the bookstore already
- Other texts may be available through AOK Library Articles, AOK Library Course Reserves, or the Library’s InterLibrary Loan service
- Then check VitalSource, it is possible you may be able to purchase them directly
- If ALL else is unavailable submit through SDS with: Title, Edition, Author, Publisher, ISBM#

Deaf & Hard of Hearing
Students who are deaf and hard of hearing can request for services through our request form. On the form you can request for ASL Interpreters, Transcriptions, and Document Remediation.
Request for Students
For Students its best to Request for an interpreter at MINIMUM two days before they are needed, ideally you should submit your request a week in advance
Requests for Guests and Staff
Staff, visitors, and guests should make their need for an interpreter known atleast two weeks in advnace from when they know they will be here

Assignment Extension
You must have the accommodation for assignment extension to be able to use this.
- If you need to use this accommodation, contact your professor to initiate
- The request is expected to be submitted prior to the due date
- Approval is done on a per assignment basis
- Agreed due date extensions should be adressed in writing

Emotional Support Animal
It is possible to get an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) *Your disability must indicate the need for an ESA*
To get an ESA on campus it requires communication between the SDS office and ResLife.

It is possible to get a single room while living on campus. *Your disability must include a request for this*
Your disability must clearly state how it affects your daily life and should have a description of how living in a shared space would negatively affect you

Student Appeal and Grievances
A student who feels they have not received or have been denied accommodations or access, or has been the recipient of discrimination based on disability has the right to pursue a prompt and equitable resolution.
- Step 1: Begin by contacting our office informally to address and resolve the issue.
- Step 2: The student and a Disability Specialist will discuss potential solutions.
- Step 3: If unsatisfied, the student may request a meeting with the SDS Assistant Director.
- Step 4: If the outcome remains unsatisfactory, the student can submit a written summary of the issue to the Director, and a meeting will be scheduled either online or in person.
- Step 5: If needed, the student can file a complaint with the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
Additionally, students have the right to seek information or file a complaint directly with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

The most common issues students face when scheduling an appoint occurs when they have either selected a time range that is not compatible with our hours of operation or they select a location that does not work for our counselors To get over this issue leave the location for the appointment blank and have the time range be set from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm The location for the appointment will be listed under the counselor's name when you select the appointment

The most common issues students face when scheduling their tests occurs when they select the testing room, the building, and the days of the week When scheduling your test through accommodate ONLY use the date and time range features to find an available slot for your test Be sure to check 'yes' or 'no' on if the test is a final exam and if we must override the course length Overriding the course length would mean that the time length you choose for the test is what your accommodated time will be based on

Deaf & Hard of Hearing
Students who are deaf and hard of hearing can request for services through our request form. On the form you can request for ASL Interpreters, Transcriptions, and Document Remediation.
Request for Students
For Students its best to Request for an interpreter at MINIMUM two days before they are needed, ideally you should submit your request a week in advance
Requests for Guests and Staff
Staff, visitors, and guests should make their need for an interpreter known atleast two weeks in advnace from when they know they will be here

Emotional Support Animal
It is possible to get an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) *Your disability must indicate the need for an ESA*
To get an ESA on campus it requires communication between the SDS office and ResLife.

Fill out the ESA form There must be a clear connection to the student being impaired without the animal as opposed to having itSet up an Appointment to discuss your disability needs with the animal

Student Appeal and Grievances
A student who feels they have not received or have been denied accommodations or access, or has been the recipient of discrimination based on disability has the right to pursue a prompt and equitable resolution.
- Step 5: If needed, the student can file a complaint with the Office of Equity and Inclusion.

The most common issues students face when submitting their Semester Request occurs when they add NEW classes to their schedule You will need to resubmit your semester request that includes the new classes added to your schedule to recieve your accommodations for that class

The most common issues students face when scheduling an appoint occurs when they have either selected a time range that is not compatible with our hours of operation or they select a location that does not work for our counselors To get over this issue leave the location for the appointment blank and have the time range be set from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm The location for the appointment will be listed under the counselor's name when you select the appointment

The most common issues students face when scheduling their tests occurs when they select the testing room, the building, and the days of the week When scheduling your test through accommodate ONLY use the date and time range features to find an available slot for your test Be sure to check 'yes' or 'no' on if the test is a final exam and if we must override the course length Overriding the course length would mean that the time length you choose for the test is what your accommodated time will be based on
