How the Scoring Works

SSAT If you answer the question correctly you get 1 point If you answer incorrectly you lose -1/4 point The schools are looking at your percentile scores
ISEE Scores are based on the number of correct answers. If the student can eliminate at least one of the choices, you should make an educated guess from the choices that remain. A wrong answer and an omitted answer count the same. However, it is better to move ahead to the next item and return to the puzzling one later. No student is expected to answer all questions correctly.

What does that make you think about guessing?

Subtle negatives

Long answers--Short answers

"Not" or "Except" Questions: might choose answers that fit the opposite of what's being asked. Example: "Which of the following is not an effect of the law?"

Switchback wordsThese are the words and phrases frequently used to alert you to shifts. however, .....On the other hand, Some answers are true but irrelevant, overgeneralizing or too specific.

Read every answer choice

Spot the hedges Watch out for critical hedge words, such as likely, may, can, sometimes, often, almost, mostly, usually, generally, rarely, and sometimes. Question writers insert these hedge phrases to cover every possibility. Often an answer choice will be wrong simply because it leaves no room for exception. Example always.

Secret Key #1 Plan Big, Study Small

  • Studying a small block of content for a short period each day helps you retain information better and avoid stressing over how much you have left to do.
  • The environment you study in has a big impact on your learning. It’s also important to avoid multitasking. Research has consistently shown that multitasking will make your studying dramatically less effective.
  • Modality. Visualization, color-coding, creating symbols, audio--find a partner, teach somebody
  • Flashcards? Quizlet? Membean?
  • Mnemonic devices (such as creating a short list in which every item starts with the same letter) can also help with retention.

Secret Key #2 Make your studying count

  • Retention, interact with vocabulary 3-4 times or even 10-12 times
  • Try carrying around flashcards and glance at one or two from time to time or ask a friend who’s also studying for the test to quiz you. To enhance your retention, look for ways to put the information into practice so that you can apply it rather than simply recalling

Secret Key # 3 Practice the right way

This paragraph is ready to be filled with incredible creativity, experiences, and stories.

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The questions you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The questions you found difficult or slow to work through
  • Study the underlying concepts
  • Don't take a practice test too early

Secret Key #5 Pace yourself

When to start the guessing process Try carrying around flashcards and glance at one or two from time to time. To enhance your retention, look for ways to put the information into practice so that you can apply it rather than simply recalling. We'll read p 7-8 Mometrix/Tutorverse book on the guessing process.
