Simple past verb "TO BE"

The verb “to be” in the past is used to describe states, conditions, and locations that occurred at a specific moment in the past.

"Were" is used with the subjects "you," "we," and "they."

"Was" is used with the subjects "I," "he," "she," and "it."

In affirmative sentences, the verb "to be" in the past tense has two forms: "was" and "were"

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES

Example: They were at the concert.

  • I was at the park yesterday.
  • She was happy with her results.
  • We were at the concert last night.
  • They were excited about the trip.

"wasn't" "weren't"

In negative sentences using the simple past tense of the verb "to be," you combine the past tense forms "was" and "were" with the word "not."

NEGATIVE SENTENCES

Example: They weren't at the concert.

EXAMPLES

  • I was not (wasn't) at the office yesterday.
  • He was not (wasn't) interested in the offer.

The verb "to be" functions as an auxiliary. However, the order is different since in yes/ no questions the verb be goes at the beginning, whereas in information questions it goes after the question word.
