01.Three centuries ago, this wood was...

A hunting lodge

A King's Garden

Records of this forest date back in the 14th century. For centuries, it remained a hunting ground, thus being spared the extension of the vineyards and orchards installed by the Cister Order throughout the region. During the 20th century, the town grew, surrounding the woods, which became the heart of Bombarral, where many of the most important social events still take place. It currently occupies 40.000 square metres and is home to the ‘Wine Festival’, the ‘Rocha Pear Fair’, the Children's Festival, Firefly and Bat Watching, among others.

A natural reserve

A Mediterranean ecosystem is very well represented here. This region has a Mediterranean climate, with cooler summer temperatures and higher humidity/precipitation values than those typical of this climate. Added to this are deep soils, which together have created a perfect setting for the trees and shrubs in this woodland to grow.

Carvalho "Quarcus faginea"

Here, these trees don't lose their leaves even in winter. They can reach a height of 20 metres. They provide acorns, which can be used as flour to make bread, or fed to animals. We can also find the bugalhos, which are brownish, hollow spheres that result from a reaction to a mosquito, like a tumour, and the mosquito lays its eggs there.
