The Scientific Method Of

Skittles

START

Step 1

QUESTION: When creating an X shape on a plate with Skittles and subsequently adding hot water to the plate, what will occur?

What we already know

Step 1

When researching this experiment, when hot water is added to the Skittles, the dye disperses towards the center of the plate, resulting in a rainbow effect. So now we are left to wonder what will happen if you put an X shape of Skittles on a plate.

Step 2

The HypothesisWhen putting the Skittles in an X formation and adding hot water to the Skittles, the dye will also float in an X formation.

Step 3, Experimental research

Materials- Plate, Skittles, Hot waterIndependent variable- Hot waterDependent Variable- SkittlesConstant- Water and plate

Step 4

The data will be collected by arranging Skittles in an X format on a plate and then adding hot water to find out how the dyes from the Skittles will react with the water.

Step 4

After adding the hot water to the plate, instead of the colors moving straight across, they moved more with an arch to the other side.

So the hypothosis?

step 4

When adding the hot water to the plate, the Skittles dye did not float in an X formation but rather in a rounded formation.

Step 5

What we learned!
  • We learned that adding water to a plate with Skittles in an X formation will not have the dye from the Skittles float in an X. This can be because, since it is a rounded plate, the water surface is rounded instead of flat like an X. So, the dye will outline like the plate instead of following the shape of the skittles on the plate.
  • (I also do not own any square plates, so im unable to conduct if it's the plates fault)

Step 6

Conclusion
  • Gathered from the information and evidence provided. It shows that the Skittles moved according to the volume of the water used. As a result, the dye from the Skittles moved more rounded rather than straight across.
