According to you, what could be the possible problems caused by tourists? List them. Then, in groups of four, use the four documents to compile the issues (=problems) locals have to face because of tourism.
of Hawaii residents believe that tourism has brought more benefits than problems.

Summary
of documents A-B
Hawaii has too many tourists, making roads crowded, beaches full, and restaurants hard to use. Workers are in short supply, and tourists are doing harmful things like touching endangered animals and going to places they shouldn’t. The locals want fewer tourists, especially after the increase in visitors following the pandemic. A pastor from Kauai is upset about how tourism affects Hawaiian people. He says tourism companies use Hawaiian culture, like hula dancing, to make money in ways that are not respectful. This kind of advertising makes Hawaiians look like servants and causes harm to their sacred places. The pastor has seen many sacred sites destroyed or disturbed for new hotels and resorts.
Summary
of documents C-D
Tourism in Hawaii has destroyed many important cultural and historical places, including ancient Hawaiian burial sites. Developers have dug up or built on these areas to create condominium resorts and golf courses. Even when people protest, only small parts of the land are saved, and those are often used to attract more tourists. This is seen as disrespectful to the Hawaiian culture. Tourism is also hurting Hawaii’s environment. Beaches are crowded, and boating causes pollution that harms sea life. Some Hawaiian families have been forced to leave their homes to make way for hotels or golf courses. A professor from Tonga says that tourism is causing the loss of native cultures and traditions in many Pacific islands, including Hawaii.
Data
- water shortages : (tourists account for 45% of Hawaii water consumption) - electric and fuel consumption : tourists and hotels account for 60% of Hawaii energy consumption - environmental degradation : some species are now endangered, like the green sea turtle and some try to touch Hawaiian monk seals - housing crisis : short-term vacation rentals like AirBnB have increased the affordable housing shortage - overcrowding : roads, beaches and restaurants see tourists outnumber locals - hiking on forbidden trails, like the Diamond Head trail - cultural exploitation : Hawaiian culture is romanticized and sold through tourism marketing, which promotes stereotypes - cultural degradation : Sacred places and ancient burial sites are destroyed or used for resorts, golf courses, and more - and much more (see documents)
Pick one issue you studied and want to address as a inhabitant of Hawaii Then, design and draw a sign (=panneau) that raises awareness on the chosen issue. Write a paragraph to justify the elements you drew and the way you drew them together to create a sign that is easy to read and understand.
Read and analyse the documents. What is it that makes a sign good? Highlight and list those elements. Then, rework your first sign into a new version that takes into account what you learned. Finally, get ready to deliver a speech explaining how you reworked your sign into a better one. Be convincing and use words to compare and contrast!
Before
After
The meaning behind this sign is quite unclear. Why wouldn't more than 20 children be allowed on the road? Such a sign may confuse drivers who will not slow down in time, leading to potential accidents. Therefore, such a sign is counterproductive.
The sign pictures children leaving school in a clear and simplified manner. The figure of 20 is obviously about the speed limit. Additional information about when the rule is enforced can be found at the bottom: cars do not need to slow down outside of those hours!

DOCUMENT: Understanding Beach Warning Signs
These symbols were seen in Hawaii. Many symbols warn of dangers like strong sea currents and other risks. Since many visitors are not locals or English speakers, it's important that the symbols are easy to understand.
What do you think of the different symbols? Pick three of them, then compare and contrast them using the vocabulary below, and justify. Comparing: also, as well as, both, in the same way, like, similarly, too, .. Contrasting: conversely, however, instead, on the other hand, unlike, while, ...
In groups of four, design drafts for three signs inspired by the previous designs we studied. These signs have to address the following issues and warn about them :
SHARK SIGHTED
MAN-O-WAR
SLIPPERY ROCKS
Final task
For next time : In groups of 4, present your sign designs for : - warning about man-o-wars - warning about slippery rocks - warning about the present of sharks Add another sign to tackle a Hawaii tourism issue that hasn't be adressed before in class. Your signs need to be clear and have a polished look. You presentation requires no note, but you will need to explain your creative choices and defend them eloquently. You can explain how the designs evolved during your work Use the vocabulary to compare and contrast. Structure your presentation in a clear manner (introduction, main body, conclusion, and thanking the audience)
