Understanding Algorithmswith Huwie and Algorithmic
The Web Guardians
Huwie was excited to start his day as a guardian of the web at Digi Tower. He was in charge of hundreds of glowing screens. These weren’t just any screens – they showed him what people all around the world were doing online! He could see people laughing at funny videos, sharing pictures, learning new things, and chatting with friends.
When the screens glowed green, it meant everyone online was having a good time. But wait! Something had caught his eye.A screen flashed red! "oh-no". Huwie thought. He took a closer look and saw a young girl called Penny scrolling through her phone. She looked sad.
Suddenly, more screens started to turn red.“Beep! Beep! Beep!” went the alarm. Huwie knew this could only mean one thing – Algorithmic the algorithm had started showing videos that were making people unhappy.
Algorithmic was a Algorithm bot who worked at Digi Tower too. It's job was to suggest videos and pictures to people online. Sometimes, Algorithmic made mistakes.Instead of showing fun and happy videos, it accidentally sent ones that could make people feel sad, scared, or confused because they weren’t always true.
Algorithmic was showing videos to Penny the little girl, who loved watching playful animal, especially puppies. But one video was showing a puppy getting hurt and that made Penny feel sad! Algorithmic thought it was doing a good job by showing her more dog videos, but it didn’t understand that not all videos made people feel happy.
Huwie knew he had to act fast. He marched quickly over to Algorithmic. “We need to talk,” Huwie said.“People are not enjoying the videos you’re sending them. They are getting upset.”Why would they be upset?” Algorithmic asked confused. “I’m just sending them what they had liked before!”
Huwie explain to Algorithmic that Penny enjoyed watching videos of puppies but not all dog videos are fun to watch. "Some can be really upsetting for children, like when a puppy gets hurt. " Huwie said. "Sometimes, it’s a better to block the bad stuff.”
“Oh,” Algorithmic said. "I didn’t know. I was just following my instructions, that's how I'm programmed!"“That’s okay,” Huwie said. “We can fix it!” He opened the girl’s phone settings and went to the content control panel. With a few clicks, he blocked the upsetting videos. “There, hopefully she won’t see anything that could make her sad or scared.”
Huwie and Algorithmic spent the rest of the day adding blocks to the harmful videos and images, the red screens turned back to green.“There we go,” Huwie said, smiling. “The web should be a fun and safe place for everyone!”"I try my best to send the right videos, but sometimes I can get it wrong." said Algorithmic. "We should let everyone know that they can control what they see to be safe online." "Great idea!" agreed Huwie.
Huwie and Algorithmic want to remind us that the internet is a place full of fun, learning, and connecting with others. But sometimes, children and adults can accidentally see things that are not right for them. To keep it safe and enjoyable, parents can help by setting up content controls and talking to their children about being safe online.

A little note to parents...
The internet is a huge part of children’s everyday lives, but it comes with risks like harmful content, cyberbullying, and online scams. As kids spend more time on social media, apps, and learning tools, it's really important to help them understand how to stay safe. By teaching them how to protect their personal information and avoid dangers, we can empower them to enjoy the online world confidently and responsibly. When we talk to children about online safety, we're helping them build smart habits that keep the internet a fun and safe place for everyone.
