The following elements must be completed in order to be eligible for certification for this Teaching Pronunciation Pathway: • Completion of all platform exercises/activities: - Participants must complete all pre- and post- webinars activities on the platform. Feedback is automatic. - Two attempts are available for each of the pre- and post- webinar activity and they will be considered ‘complete’ with a score of 70%.
• Final task completion • Attendance at both live sessions: Attendance at a live session requires a minimum of 72 minutes as reported by Zoom.

NEIL AINSWORTH

Neil has been involved in ELT for over 20 years working as a teacher, teacher trainer, and director of studies in Australia, Ireland and Spain. He now works in the Global Professional Development team at OUP where he is especially interested in Bilingual Education, Mediation, and Pronunciation. Neil creates and delivers material on a wide range of PD topics both in Spain, where he is based, and internationally. He also writes for the Oxford Teachers’ Academy.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this Teaching Pronunciation Pathway participants should: • Demonstrate a good understanding of how the sounds of English are produced. • Understand the role that stress and intonation play in creating meaning. • Incorporate a range of activities into their teaching that will help their students identify and produce the sounds of English. • Draw on a variety of practical activities to help students use stress and intonation more effectively. • Have an increased understanding of the concept of international intelligibility as a pronunciation goal for learners of English

PART 1: SOUNDS
PART 2: STRESS AND TONE

What do we mean by stress and tone? - word/sentence stress - types of intonation • How do we teach stress and tone? - From identification to production (drilling) • How do we create meaning through stress and tone? - Corrective, emphatic stress etc. - Attitudinal intonation • Activities for teaching stress and tone • An integrated approach to teaching pronunciation

How do we make sounds? • The phonemic chart • What do learners want to achieve in terms of their pronunciation? • What is important to teach? • How do we teach individual sounds? - From identifying sounds to producing sounds - Exploring minimal pairs • Activities for teaching sounds
