A quick revision of the Zero and First Conditional

CONDITIONALS

ZERO CONDITIONAL

The MAIN CLAUSE is the result of the sentence. It's what happen if the condiction occurs.

The IF CLAUSE is the condition of the sentence. It's what has to happen to obtain the result..

When we talk about conditionals we have to take into account that they always follow the same structure. Conditionals are formed by two different parts: The IF CLAUSE and the MAIN CLAUSE.

CONDITIONALS

IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, + PRESENT SIMPLE

Zero conditional is used to talk about facts or actions that always happen in the same way. There are obvious results of a condition. They are usually related to scientific facts or actions personally true. The structure is the following:

Some examples of the zero conditional are: Scientific facts like

  • If you freeze water, it turns into ice.
  • If you heat water, it boils.
  • Ice melts when you heat it.
Personal truths:
  • I get tired if I work too much.
  • if students miss an exam, the teacher fails them.
  • If I have a toothache, I go to the dentist.

EXAMPLES

FIRST CONDITIONAL

IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, + FUTURE SIMPLE

First conditional is used to talk about facts or actions that always happen in the future. When talk about future possibilities, thing that may or may not happen in the future. The structure is the following:

USE OF FIRST CONDITIONAL

If it rains tomorrow, I’ll stay at home. If you study hard, you’ll pass the exam. If they don’t arrive by 5 pm, we’ll leave without them. If you press that button, the machine will start. If she doesn’t sleep enough, she’ll be tired tomorrow.

ZERO VS FIRST CONDITIONAL

Both conditionals have different uses. Zero conditional is for general ideas or obvious conditions when first conditional is for the future actions that can happen. Remember when using the first conditional that we have future simple in the main clause.
