Hawaiian culture began with Polynesian settlers around 300-600 AD, who brought their traditions to the islands located in the central Pacific Ocean. The Hawaiian Islands were unified under King Kamehameha In 1810. Western influence started in 1778 with the arrival of Captain James Cook, and the culture experienced significant shifts after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and subsequent U.S. annexation in 1898.
