Le sei fasi principali della germinazione di un seme sono:

Imbibizione: Il seme assorbe acqua dall'ambiente circostante, facendolo gonfiare. Questo attiva gli enzimi interni, dando inizio al processo di crescita. Rottura del tegumento: La pressione interna causata dall'acqua rompe il tegumento, la "buccia" protettiva del seme, permettendo al germoglio di fuoriuscire. Emergenza della radichetta: La prima struttura a emergere è la radichetta, che si dirige verso il basso per ancorare la pianta al suolo e iniziare a cercare acqua e nutrienti. Crescita dell'ipocotile: L'ipocotile, la parte inferiore del fusto, si allunga spingendo il germoglio fuori dal terreno, verso la luce. Sviluppo dei cotiledoni: I cotiledoni, le prime foglioline embrionali, emergono dal seme e iniziano a produrre energia attraverso la fotosintesi. Sviluppo della piantina: La pianta comincia a sviluppare foglie vere, cresce e si stabilizza nel terreno, continuando a nutrirsi con la fotosintesi.
