CHRISTMAS DAY December 25th

1 MAY DAY 1ST DAY

1 MOTHERING SUNDAY

Mothering Sunday is celebrated the fourth Sunday of Lent). Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday, is now a day to honor mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law.

Although it's often called Mothers' Day it has no connection with the American festival of that name.Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday, is now a day to honor mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law.

Many folklore customs have their roots planted firmly back in the Dark Ages, when the ancient Celts had divided their year by four major festivals. Beltane or ‘the fire of Bel’, had particular significance to the Celts as it represented the first day of summer and was celebrated with bonfires to welcome in the new season. Still celebrated today, we perhaps know Beltane better as May 1st, or May Day .

It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. Traditional English May Day celebrations include Morris dancing, crowning a May Queen and dancing around a Maypole. (Barrow, 2013)

St. Patrick´s Day March 17th

St. Patrick´s Day is held I honor of the patron Saint of Ireland. The work of St. Patrick (c.389-c.461) was vital for the spreading of Christianity in Ireland. Born in Britain, he was taken off by pirates and spent the next years being their slave. After escaping, he started training as a missionary. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools.

London has a great quantity of Irish people, so it´s quite a big celebration. There is a big parade held on the nearest Monday if it falls on a weekend of March. This annual parade usually takes place in Trafalgar Square.

The Christmas period begins with Advent, four Sundays before Christmas Day. The Advent calendar features small windows or doors that children open every day for the 24 days before Christmas and which hide a surprise photo or chocolate.

Houses are decorated with festive decorations such as garlands and trees made of holly, ivy and mistletoe. Christmas wreaths are placed on doors, fireplaces and tables. Since 1947, Norway has given England a large Christmas tree each year, which is placed in Trafalgar Square to commemorate Anglo-Norwegian cooperation during World War II.

Christmas is a truly magical season that brings families and friends together to share the much-loved customs and traditions which have been around for centuries. On this holiday, people stay at home with their family. It´s very similar to the Christmas celebrated in America.

One of the main differences that we can find between the UK and the US when it comes to witnessing its monuments, is that the UK's focus is on its millenary history, having maintained to a greater extent the conservation and care of the sites. A relationship that can come to represent the identity between UK and USA would be the big ben in the UK, representing tradition and government, and on the part of USA would be the statue of liberty, which would represent freedom and democracy.

Big Ben

The Houses of Parliament, formally known as the Palace of Westminster, is the meeting place of the British government; hence its great iconic value, as some of the most important decisions were made and historic agreements were signed inside.

Houses of Parliaments

The Tower of London

Standing for over 1,000 years, this historic monument has served many disparate purposes: a fortress, a prison, a royal mint and even a zoo. Since the 1600s, the Tower has also been home to the royal family's most prized possessions. Today, the Queen's Crown Jewels are still kept there and are guarded by the Beefeaters (ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London).

Big Ben is perhaps the world's most prominent clock and London's most famous landmark. With the construction of Big Ben completed in 1859, the famous four-faced clock has continued to tell the time so accurately for over 150 years without stopping. Today, its iconic architecture does not go unnoticed, even by locals.

1 MEMORIAL DAY 26 MAY

MOTHERS DAY

Mother's Day in the United States is usually celebrated on the second Sunday in May, but this year in 2024 it will be celebrated on the 12th, unlike in the UK, which celebrates it on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

In the United States, there is no tradition of celebrating the arrival of summer. Instead, Memorial Day is celebrated, which marks the beginning of summer and when many families and friends gather to have barbecues, go to the beach and do other outdoor activities.

In many cities, festivals and events are held to welcome the warm season, unlike in the United Kingdom, which celebrates it differently with dances and the crowning of a May Queen.

Since then, Mother's Day has been one of the most commercially successful holidays in the US. Mothers often receive flowers, cards, chocolates and other gifts from their children. Unlike in the UK, many celebrate this day by cooking for their mothers and giving them a day off from household chores.

St. Patrick´s Day March 17th

On March 17th of each year, one of the biggest celebrations in the North American country takes place: St. Patrick's Day. A party that takes over some of the largest cities in the USA such as New York, Boston or Chicago, painting their main streets and rivers green, while toasting with liters of beer, whiskey, costumes and traditional Irish music. This is one of the most similar tradition that the UK has with the United States.

CHRISTMAS DESEMBER 25th

x

The traditional celebration of Christmas in the United States consists of a family meal that usually includes turkey or ham. Typical accompaniments are mashed potatoes, and a traditional drink for this date is liquor or punch. Many families bake gingerbread cookies or apple pie as part of their Christmas tradition.

Another characteristic of Christmas in the United States is that children open their presents from Santa Claus on the morning of the 25th and, in addition, they usually hang stockings with Christmas decorations (stockings) on the fireplace, which Santa Claus fills with sweets and small gifts. The Christmas atmosphere begins to be felt several weeks before Christmas Day, when Christmas decorations and lights begin to be seen in stores, streets and in many houses. This tradition is very similar to that of the United Kingdom since in both countries there is decoration with trees and lights, and there is also socializing with family and friends.

In the United States, something that differentiates it from the United Kingdom in terms of its monuments is that most of them are now reflected in modernity and technological advances. In both places there can be monuments that have the purpose of preserving history and celebrating important milestones, such as the Tower of London and Independence Hall, as they tell important stories of how these countries became what they are today.

Statue of Liberty

Independence Hall

Mount Rushmore

The Statue of Liberty, besides being an important monument in New York City, became a symbol in the United States and represents, on a more general level, freedom and emancipation from oppression.

Located in Philadelphia, Independence Hall is the building where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed in 1776 and 1787, respectively. Since the adoption of these two documents, the universal principles of liberty and democracy proclaimed in them have been central to the history of the United States and have greatly influenced lawmakers around the world.

They were sculpted by Danish-American sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum. This monument commemorates the birth, growth, preservation and development of the American nation.
