Passive Voice

Objective: the student will learn how to structure and use passive voice in English.

ACTIVE VOICE

SUBJECT + VERB + OBJECT

MY FATHER EATS THE APPLE PIE.

S

V

O

Usually, the subject is the doer in a sentence. It can be understood as:

  • Agent: The subject is often the person, animal, or thing performing the action.
  • Experiencer: The subject can also be the person or thing experiencing a state or condition.

The object is affected by the action. It can be:

  • Direct: The person, thing, or animal that directly receives the action of the verb
  • Indirect: The person or thing that indirectly receives the action, often benefiting from or being affected by it.

PASSIVE VOICE

OBJECT AS SUBJECT + VERB

THE APPLE PIE IS EATEN.

S (O)

V

It's a grammar structure in which we change the focus of the main participants within a sentence. The object takes the subject position and the subject takes the object position.

What happens with the doer?

Usually the subject of the active-voice sentence can be recovered in the passive-voice sentence with a prepositional phrase.

My father eats the apple pie.

The apple pie is eaten by my father.

THE VERB

For passive voice you must use the verb in its passive form, which is structured as follow:

TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE

VERB "to be" Choose the correct form of "to be" based on the tense you want to use (e.g., am, is, are, was, were, will be, has been, had been, will have been).

Past participle: This is the third form of the verb (e.g., eaten, seen, done).
