Topic 2: The present continuous

ENGLISH ESSENTIALS

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The present continuous, also known as the present progressive, is used to describe actions that are occurring at the current moment or are in progress and it can also be used to talk about future plans.

NOW

"ING"

AUXILIARies: "TO BE" am- is- are

RULES

All verbs end in –ing. Example: The elephant is playing in the water.

Verbs that end in double e keep this ending and add –ing at the end. Example: I am seeing my lawyer next Monday.

When a verb ends in a consonant, the final letter should be doubled before adding the –ing ending. Example: The jaguar is running.

Verbs ending in –ie change to –y + -ing. Example: He is lying to his boss.

If the verb ends in a silent e, this letter is removed and the –ing ending is added. Example: They are dancing cumbias.
