Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated on 26 December in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Traditionally, it originated as a day to give gifts or "boxes" (hence the name) to employees, workers and people in need. In the UK it was a custom for tradesmen to give Christmas boxes of money or gifts to their workers on the first weekend after Christmas as a thank you for good service during the year. This is mentioned in the diary of Samuel Pepys on 19 December 1663. This custom was linked to an old British tradition, when servants of the wealthy were allowed to leave the following day to visit their families. Employers could give each servant a box to take home containing gift vouchers and sometimes leftover food.

Good Friday is an important Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death on Calvary. It is celebrated on the Friday before Easter and is one of the most solemn dates in the Christian calendar. In the UK, it is a public holiday when many businesses close, and churches hold special services of reflection and prayer. Tradition on this day includes the consumption of simple, meatless foods such as bread and fish. A characteristic Good Friday food in the UK is Hot Cross Buns, sweet buns decorated with a cross, symbolising the crucifixion. Good Friday is a time of reflection and recollection for believers, who often attend religious services, some of which include processions or re-enactments of the Stations of the Cross, recalling the events of Christ's Passion.
