Unit 2 Lesson 1
+ INFO
- The Earth is a system that consists of air, water, rock and living things.
- All of the “parts” interact with each other.
Earth: A System
1.
- The Geosphere consists of all the rock, soils and sediments on the Earth
- Most of the Geosphere is located in the Earth’s interior.
- The average diameter of the Earth is 12,756 km

Earth has Layers
Like an Onion
We have learned what Earth's Interior layers look like by studying how seismic waves (earthquakes) pass through the Earth.
How do we know?
Scientists divide the Earth into three layers based on their composition or make-up.

Other Facts
Core
Mantle
Crust
The center of Earth's interior. The Earth's core is mostly iron and nickel.
Both temperature and pressure increase the closer you get to Earth's center.
Is the thinnest layer and is like the skin of an apple.
Makes up 65% of Earth's interior. The mantle is made up of hot rock.

Earth Has 4 Spheres
- Earth's land makes up the GEOSPHERE. The prefix GEO means earth or land.
- Eath's water makes up the HYDROSPHERE. The prefix HYDRO means water.
- Earth's air makes up the ATMOSPHERE. The prefix ATMOS means air.
- All of the life on Earth make up the BIOSPHERE. The prefix BIO means life.
