Chick-Energy connect
By Ricardo, Diego, Sophia and Fátima
Objectives
Expand access to energy
In rural areas of Madagascar by increasing the use of renewable energy sources.
Sustainable energy solutions
Promote the use and installation of renewable energy to help reduce dependence on firewood and combat deforestation.
Job creation
Assist communities through training in the energy and communication sectors to create jobs.
Project description
+ info
Chick-Energy Connect is a project that aims to improve access to energy and communication in Madagascar. The plan is to install solar panels and small wind generators in several communities, in order to provide electricity in a sustainable way. This will allow more people to have access to electricity, which in turn will reduce the need to use firewood as fuel, protecting the forests.
Justification
Madagascar faces many challenges due to the lack of electricity and good communication routes. Only 23% of the population has access to electricity, with rural areas being the most affected. This leads to many people using firewood as their main source of energy, which is causing serious deforestation. In addition, only 5% of the population uses the internet and 35% have mobile phones, limiting access to basic services such as education and health.
Chick-Energy Connect is necessary because by improving access to energy and communication, many opportunities will open up for people. Communities will be able to access better services, create new jobs and protect the environment by reducing tree felling. In addition, the use of renewable energy sources will move Madagascar towards a more sustainable future.
Action Plan
PHASE 1
PHASE 2
PHASE 3
PHASE 4
PHASE 5
Resources needed
Budget
A large monetary investment is needed to cover infrastructure, training and operation costs, which can be obtained from other sources and exchanged for some resources.
Human resources
Engineers, renewable energy specialists, telecommunications technicians, trainers.
Equipment
Solar panels, wind turbines, small hydroelectric generators, batteries, communication towers, broadband infrastructure.
Partnerships
With government, NGOs, mobile and internet service providers and local communities.
Community Involvement
Malagasy residents will receive hands-on training to build, maintain, and repair the new energy and communication systems. Through workshops, they’ll have the chance to share their needs and be involved in key decisions.
Schools, hospitals, and local businesses will benefit first from the new energy and internet services, boosting education, healthcare, and economic growth. The communities will also take part in reforestation efforts, helping protect the environment for future generations.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead
30%
A 30% improvement in environmental sustainability is expected, thanks to the reduction of deforestation and the use of clean energy sources. In addition, the creation of jobs in these sectors will generate 25% economic growth in the benefited regions, reducing poverty and improving the quality of life of the local population.
25%
Internet access will increase from 5% to 25%, and cell phone coverage will rise from 35% to 70%.These improvements will facilitate access to education, health and new economic opportunities.
Expected Results
50%
By the end of the project, at least 50% of rural areas will have access to electricity from renewable sources. This will reduce dependence on firewood and fossil fuels, decreasing deforestation and improving environmental sustainability.
Thanks!
PHASE 2
- Install solar panels and small wind turbines in.
- Create energy storage systems and ensure connection to public buildings such as schools and hospitals.
- 12 months.
This project will include community workshops where Malagasy people will learn how to maintain and repair the new energy and communication systems. The idea is that the communities themselves will be able to manage these resources independently in the long term. All this with the aim of also creating jobs for them.
PHASE 5
- Evaluate energy usage, growth in internet access, deforestation reduction, and community impact.
- Collect community feedback to adjust the project as needed.
- Ongoing
PHASE 1
- Conduct studies to understand energy and communication needs.
- Identify strategic locations for installation of renewable energy stations and communication towers.
- 3 months.
PHASE 3
- Expand internet tower coverage.
- Agreements with mobile and internet service providers.
- 12 months.
PHASE 4
- Launch reforestation projects to counter deforestation caused by firewood use.
- Provide cleaner fuel alternatives to reduce dependence on firewood.
- 6 months.
