AMYLIN MIMETICS
INCRETIN MIMETICS
Prototype medicaiton
Exenatide
AMylin Mimetics: PrAMlintide
Mimics amylin = slows gastric emptying, suppresses glucagon, and increases satiety.
Mimics GLP-1, increases insulin release, decreases glucagon, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite.
Therapeutic Uses
GI upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), risk of pancreatitis.
Complications
Nausea, reaction at injection sites.
Avoid incretin mimetics in clients with kidney issues, GI conditions, or a history of pancreatitis.
contraindications/Precautions
Avoid amylin mimetics in clients with kidney failure or on dialysis.
Can delay absorption of oral medications; take oral meds at least 1 hour before.
Avoid concurrent insulin use; high hypoglycemia risk.
Interactions
For type 2 diabetes; used with other antidiabetics (ex.: metformin).
Instruct clients to report severe abdominal pain; it may indicate pancreatitis.
Also Liraglutide, Albiglutide, Lixisenatide, Dulaglutide, Semaglutide
Supplemental glucose control for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, often with insulin.
Educate to rotate injection sites and monitor for adverse effects.
