We use the comparative to compare two people, places or things.

We use THAN after the comparative form of the adjective.

John is taller than Mary.

Rules

Rule nº 1

Short adjective + ER.

Cheap (barato)- cheaper (más barato) A radio is cheaper than a laptop. Small - Smaller The chair is smaller than the table.

old 🡪 older Alice is older than Alberto. Young - younger. Alberto is younger than Alice.

Rule nº 2

Consonant - Vowel - Consonant + ER: The final consonant is doubled

Big - Bigger The dinosaur is bigger than the mouse. Hot - hotter The sun is hotter than the moon. El sol es más caliente que la luna.

Rule nº 3

For short adjectives ending in Y, we add IER.

Easy - easier English is easier than maths. Heavy - heavier A stone is heavier than a feather.

Rule nº 4

Long Adjectives: MORE + adjective + THAN

exciting 🡪 more exciting A birthday party is more exciting than a film. beautiful 🡪 more beautiful A flower is more beautiful than a table. Expensive (caro) 🡪 more expensive (más caro) The electric fan is more expensive than the torch.

Irregular Adjectives

Good - better Your bike is better than mine. Bad - worse. My car is worse than yours. Little - less. I sleep less than my father

The woman is old. The man is older than the woman. The woman is old, but she is younger than the man.

The bird is beautiful. The peacock is more beautiful than the bird.

We use the superlative to compare more than two people, places or things.

We use THE before the superlative form of the adjective.

John is the tallest.

Irregular Adjectives

Good - the best. Your bike is the best. Bad - the worst. My car is the worst. Little - the least. It was the least I could do.
