TThe USS Arizona wreck is a naval tomb containing the remains of 1,102 crew members, making it a sacred site. A first monument was established in 1950, and in 1958, President Eisenhower approved the creation of a more significant memorial, funded by private contributions. Designed by Alfred Preis and inaugurated in 1962, the white, 56-meter-long structure sits above the sunken ship, symbolizing both defeat and victory. The monument preserves one of the ship's bells and lists the names of the 1,177 fallen. The ship still leaks fuel, known as "black tears" in Hawaii.
