Bob Marley was one of the pioneers of a new genre of music - originating in Jamaica in the 1960s - called reggae. The reggae genre grew out from traditional Jamaican music and other more recently developed genres such as rocksteady and ska

Reggae music relies heavily on the bass and drums to give it its distinctive sound.

Reggae music generally has a slow tempo.Tempo = speed It is often sung in Jamaican patois - the type of English spoken on the island of Jamaica.

Reggae is more than just a musical genre. It is also a way for musicians to spread information, discuss problems or speak out against issues in society.

Bob Marley spent three years living in London.

During his career, Bob Marley sold nearly 20 million records although, unbelievably, he never scored a number 1 hit in the U.K. Sadly, he became very ill whilst performing in the USA and had to be taken to hospital in Miami, Florida, where he died, aged just 36.

Through his music and lyrics, Bob Marley fought against injustice, racism, colonialism and fought for freedom and tolerance.

For this reason, his music is still incredibly popular and relevant today.
