maritime transport
Multimodal is the combination of different types of transport to move a shipment. The carrier can include trucks, trains, ships, airplanes, etc. Even though the load breaks down into different modes of transport, it still falls under a single contract/bill of lading. Companies that choose multimodal shipping can handle all shipping delays and interactions through one provider and ease the stress of communicating between different contacts. Some of the main advantages of multimodal transport are efficiency in delivery time and proficient shipment tracking.
Multimodal transport can benefit many businesses that ship large amounts of freight regularly. The main reason companies prefer multimodal is that it requires less time and effort than compared to the intermodal. This is because all the shipments are under a single bill and managed by an external party. There are many reasons your company should choose multimodal transport when planning your shipment.
It may seem like picking carriers with the lowest price is more profitable. However, the lowest price is not always the best or most reliable option. Multimodal transportation is a more straightforward option to work with a third-party freight broker to coordinate shipments. 3PLs expertise can ensure you get the best rate with a reliable multimodal carrier.
Maritime containers
A dry container is essentially a type of standard shipping container used to accommodate dry, non-temperature-sensitive and non-hazardous shipments. Typically 40′ in size, these containers constitute strong steel to resist rain, wind and saltwater elements.
A high cube is the taller cousin of 20ft and 40ft standard containers – with an extra foot of height. Due to its popularity in the industry, sourcing this container type from reliable suppliers at prices that fit your budget can be tricky.
Refrigerated containers, also called reefer containers, are used for goods that need to be temperature controlled during shipping. Reefer containers are equipped with a refrigeration unit that is connected to the power supply on board the ship.
A flatrack container is a piece of equipment used to ship products internationally when the cargo cannot fit inside a standard container. A flatrack only has walls or support post on the ends, which allows for the loading of cargo from the top and/or sides.
The open side container is an affordable way to store goods or ship goods. It’s also known as a ventilated container because it has openings on all four sides. This allows the air to flow in and out of the container, which keeps the produce fresh for longer periods of time.Open side containers are usually used for produce since it helps keep the produce fresh for much longer than traditional storage methods. Some companies use open side containers to transport their products overseas too.
Open top containers have an open top covered by a tarpaulin instead of a solid roof. This enables oversized cargo such as timber and scrap metal to be loaded from the top. Open top containers normally also have end doors, like closed containers, to give flexibility for loading and unloading.
The ISO Tank Container, also known as the UN portable tank, tank container, ISOtainer, tanktainer, bulk storage container, shipping tank, or intermodal tank, is used for the transportation and storage of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, foodstuffs, and liquefied gases.
A bulk container is a type of shipping container specifically designed for transporting bulk cargo. It is constructed with an open-top and usually without sides, allowing for the easy loading and unloading of bulk goods, such as grains, coal, or minerals, using gravity or mechanical methods. Bulk containers may have hinged covers, removable roof sections, or other features that facilitate the loading and discharge of bulk cargo.
