  • The Americans over 18 years old vote for their president and his or her vice-president.

  • All the Americans vote for 538 senators and representatives who make up the ELECTORAL COLLEGE.
  • This Electoral College elects the president.
  • The president must obtain 270 votes so as to be elected. As a result, the candidate is not elected because he nationally gets many votes but because he gets many votes from the Electoral College.
  • During the campaign, swing states are really important !

THE voteINDIRECT VOTING / SUFFRAGE

THE DIFFERENT STEPS

4.ELECTORAL COLLEGEThese electors vote for the new President. The candidate becomes the new President when he gets ( obtains ) 270 votes and more . He and the vice-président are inaugurated in January.

3.GENERAL ELECTIONS :People in every state vote for GENERAL ELECTORS .Their number equals the number of senators in each state and representatives in Congress .There are 538 ELECTORS and they form the ELECTORAL COLLEGE

2.NATIONAL CONVENTIONS : the presidential candidate chooses the vice presidential candidate and he campaigns throughout the country to get/ obtain support .

1.PRIMARIES OR CAUCUSES: party members select the ideal candidate to represent the party ( Democrat or Republican ) .He is the NOMINEE.

Next

The number of votes is not crucial because most states traditionally vote the same way . The red states are Republican whereas the blue states are Democrat. It all depends on the SWING STATES ( les Etats indécis ) which can vote for Democrats or for Republicans ; they can change from one election to another.
