La teoría celular es un principio fundamental en biología y medicina que establece que todos los organismos vivos están compuestos por células. Esta teoría fue formulada en el siglo XIX por los científicos alemanes Matthias Schleiden y Theodor Schwann.

El metabolismo celular no es más que un conjunto de reacciones químicas que permite a la célula seguir realizando sus funciones vitales y adaptarse al medio que les rodea

Algunas células, como las vegetales, tienen nutrición autótrofa y son capaces de fabricar su propia materia orgánica (en los cloroplastos) y de oxidarla para obtener energía (en las mitocondrias)
