the structure

A tabloid talk show is an informal conversation held between a host, a panel of guests and a live audience.A host (who will work as a moderator) introduces the topic and the first guest briefly, then proceeds to talk to him/her for a few minutes. The next guest, generally a person either involved in the matter or who has a similar issue going on, is listening backstage. The host introduces next guest and continues the interview. This goes on depending on the number of guests invited.

The audience is free to participate in the conversation by giving their opinions at any moment during these parts.

There can be confrontation between the guests and the audience.

Generally, there is a confrontation between the guests involved.

questions so far?

so what will we actually do?

You will create your own tabloid talk show in which you will invite the main characters of the graphic novel to tell their stories from their own point of view. You will work in two teams, one of six, and one of seven members. While each team records their show, the other will work as an audience (so yes, you will appear in both talk shows). Each team will choose a character (different to Marji) from whose point of view the story will be told.Remember that a tabloid talk show has a host and you must invite an expert to give his/her opinion on the matter. Characters that you can invite to your show include Marji (although she must not be your first guest since it is not her point of view you are presenting), Marji's parents, Marji's Grandma, Uncle Anoosh, Mehri, etc.

how will this work out?

You will have one class to plan your talk show, since it is unscripted TV, you don't need a script, only an outline of your story line. You must know your characters well to be able to act like them on the spot, so make sure to know them and their context in depth.Keep in mind the themes of this graphic novel, which we have analyzed in class, when creating your characters and outlining your show. Each team will take turns to present their talk show to their classmates and record the necessary scenes (remember that if your team is not presenting, you will be part of the audience and are encouraged to participate). You will have one class for this, so come prepared.

After that, you will edit your show to resemble a real TV show. You will give it a name and give your episode a title. Every member of the team must have a role on the show. The final product must last at least 25 minutes.

how will you be graded?

You will be evaluated both in the content and delivery of your show, so pay attention to the details! The rubric will be available in Classroom, don't forget to check it!

Now let's take a look at an example talk show

pay attention to the host and the dramatic reactions of both the guests and the audience!

Sally Jesse Raphael

Check the way the show is edited (it is given an intro, a music theme, there are flashes to backstage, etc)Pay attention to how the guests, audience, and experts behave.

Don't forget to have fun!

Tip: Remember that characterization and body language make up a big part of communication!

Make sure everyone in your team knows their characters and be ready to record when your time comes!

An expert in the topic is then invited on stage to give their professional opinion on each of the situations discussed (generally offering advice on the matter).
