Nervous System
Santiago Cobos
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord. It is responsible for processing information and coordinating responses. (Thau et al., 2022)
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Connects the central nervous system with the rest of the body. Includes nerves and ganglia. (Du Cancer, 2020)
Peripheral Nervous System
It controls involuntary functions such as breathing and digestion.
Autonomous Nervous System
Promotes relaxation and energy conservation.Part of the nervous system that slows the heart, dilates blood vessels, reduces pupil size, increases digestive juices, and relaxes the muscles of the digestive system.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
(Professional, 2024)
A network of nerves that helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” responsePrepares the body for situations of stress or danger.
Sympathetic Nervous:
Controls voluntary functions such as muscle movement. Is a component of the peripheral nervous system associated with the voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles. (Akinrodoye & Lui, 2022)
Somatic Nervous System
Types of Neurons
03
Interneuron Neuron
02
Motor Neuron
01
Sensory Neuron
They transmit sensory signals to the central nervous system.
(Thau et al., 2022)
They transmit motor signals from the central nervous system to the muscles and glands.
(Professional, 2024)
They connect other neurons in the nervous system.
(Thau et al., 2022)
Neuron
It is the central part of the neuron. Contains the nucleus and organelles. Its function is to keep the neuron alive and process the information received.
Cell Body
They are branches that come out of the cell body. They receive signals from other neurons and send them to the cell body.
Dendrites:
Synaptic TerminalsWOW
Axon
.
Long extension that carries electrical signals from the cell body to other neurons or muscles. Some axons are covered by myelin, a substance that speeds up the transmission of nerve impulses.
Ends of the axon where communication with other neurons occurs. They release neurotransmitters to the next cell.
