En el siglo XVI la letra de cambio evoluciona, dejando de ser un mero instrumento de un contrato de cambio para convertirse en un autentico medio de pago,

la ordenanza de colbert de 1673 estriba en el hecho de que fueron las primeras leyes de derecho mercantil promulgadas por un estado moderno.

En 1737 el ordenamiento jurídico colonial español, instauró las ordenanzas de Bilbao, surgiendo en el año 1737 como un código de comercio, para 19 países iberoamericanos, su función consistía en regular puertos, carreteras, ferrocarriles, libros contables de los comerciantes, contratos, seguros y letras de cambio, entre muchos otros asuntos vinculados al área comercial.
