ORIGINS
In 1853, President Antonio López de Santa Anna launched a competition for Mexico's national anthem, offering a prize for the best patriotic poem. Despite his reluctance, Francisco González Bocanegra was pressured by his fiancée, Guadalupe, to participate. After being locked in a room for inspiration, he produced a winning entry published on February 3, 1854.
ORIGINS
A parallel music competition also took place, with Juan Bottesini's entry initially rejected. Jaime Nunó, a Catalonian bandleader invited by Santa Anna, won with his composition "God and Freedom" ("Dios y libertad"). Nunó’s music was selected on August 12, 1854, and the anthem was officially adopted on September 16, 1854.
