jim crow laws : 1877/1964 1964-> end by Civil Right Act-segregationist law for Black Americans in the Southren States-the name was taken by a song, Jump Jim Crow in which a white man,Tom Steve Rice represented a black character Jim Crow. He used black paint on his face (==> Black faces) to cahricature Afro Americans.-the law : couldn't share places or facilities with white people (ex: in the bus white people where at the front of it while black people were at the back), couldn't mary a white person, a white doctor can choose not to heal a black person, they had different school, taps in the streets. The constitution stated that it could be different as long as it existed for both groups: Separate but equal. Freedom riders were young activists from the north who rode on buses south to explain to the Black community their rights and help them with the litteacy tests they had to undergo to be able to vote.

Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was an African American revolutionary, Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement until his assassination in 1965. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam (NOI) until 1964, he was a controversial figure accused of preaching violence. he was murdered by the Nation of Islam after ralying Martin Luther King.

Who wrote the song?

In 1937, Abel Meeropol, a Jewish schoolteacher from New York City and later the adoptive father of the sons of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, saw a copy of Beitler's 1930 photograph. Meeropol later said that the photograph "haunted [him] for days" and inspired his poem "Bitter Fruit". It was published in the New York Teacher in 1937 and later in the magazine New Masses, in both cases under the pseudonym Lewis Allan. Meeropol set his poem to music, renaming it "Strange Fruit". He performed it at a labor meeting in Madison Square Garden. In 1939 it was performed, recorded and popularized by American singer Billie Holiday. The song reached 16th place on the charts in July 1939, and has since been recorded by numerous artists, continuing into the 21st century.

First, we can note that all the speakers use emphasis to convince the crowd. However, there are significant differences between them. Indeed, if MLK uses a solemn tone, Malcolm X is more aggressive and straight to the point. He emphizes a lot of meaningful words or expression, but gives concrete examples instead of using poetic metaphors. On the other hand, The Black Panthers' speech sounds more like a machine gun. Unlike MLK, they use words like weapons to reach their goal. In a nutshell, we could conclude that their aim is the same even if they don't use the same means to reach it.

- The Klu Klux Klan is a hate group of racist people (white supremacists)that was founded in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War. -They gathered to do all kinds of acts against black people.Such as intimidation, assault, murders, burning , ...They acted in the South of the USA, for example in Mississipi.-Their clan has a symbol which is composed of a cross (refering to the crusaders), inside a circle with a drop of blood in the middle of a white diamond.

Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister who became a Civil right leader advocating passive resistance and non violence. Born in 1929, ,he was murdered in Memphis, Tenessee in 1968. He was awarded the Nobel peace Prize in 1964.

The first minstrel shows were racists shows performed in the1830s New York by white performers with blackened faces (most used burnt cork or shoe polish) and tattered clothing who imitated and mimicked enslaved Africans on Southern plantations. These performances characterized blacks as lazy, ignorant, superstitious, hypersexual, and prone to thievery and cowardice. Thomas Dartmouth Rice, known as the “Father of Minstrelsy,” developed the first popularly known blackface character, “Jim Crow” in 1830. By 1845, the popularity of the minstrel had spawned an entertainment subindustry, manufacturing songs and sheet music, makeup, costumes, as well as a ready-set of stereotypes upon which to build new performances.

Stokeley Carmicheal (Aka Kwame Ture)saw the racial discrimination since his yougest age. He joined the student organisation against racism called the SNCC( Student Nonviolent Coordinating Commitee) In 1961 he was on a tour with for the freedom riders (a group of young activists from the North who went south to help the Black population. He was a leading member of the Black Power movement. First in favour of passive resistance, he became more radical later on.
