Bavarian Pretzel
While today’s pretzels are savoury on purpose, the original was meant to be sweet, and only ended up being a savoury snack in the 19th century when the king’s baker mistook baking soda for sugar. It was a mistake he would not regret as the accidental snack is still enjoyed by locals and visitors today. Often eaten at breakfast, the Bavarian pretzel makes a great accompaniment to weisswurst (veal sausages).

Back in the Middle Ages, this bread was baked for up to 24 hours in clay ovens, giving the bread its dark colour that it’s named after. The slices are often topped with cheese, sausage, fish or jam. Don’t feel guilty if you want to go in for a couple more slices; East Frisian black bread is thought to be very healthy.

While today’s pretzels are savoury on purpose, the original was meant to be sweet, and only ended up being a savoury snack in the 19th century when the king’s baker mistook baking soda for sugar. Often eaten at breakfast, the Bavarian pretzel makes a great accompaniment to weisswurst (veal sausages).
