Malocclusion

Danielle Booher

Malocclusion in animals is commonly seen in laboratory rodents. Rodents naturally work in a gnawing motion and their teeth start to erupt at 10-12 days of age. Their teeth are composed of dentin and hard enamel that is usually a orange-yellow color from iron.

Symptoms

While the best diagnosis would be to regularly check the teeth their are some signs an animal has malocclusion. The discomfort will cause them to not eat or drink so malnourishment is a huge sign.

Causes and treatment

Malocclusion is mostly caused by hard cages. But can also be caused by genetics, fighting, improper handling, and food being too hard. Treatment of malocclusion would be to either surgically realign jaw or trim down the teeth.
