1 - Read and highlight, proper nouns, numbers, words you know and verbs
2 - Prepare a short presentation about the population of New Zealand
2 - Present a short chronology of New Zealand’s history (1 sentence per paragraph)
The Maori people arrived in an island near Tahiti 1,000 years ago but in 1600s the Dutch came and named the island "Niew Zealand". They colonised the island and in 1840 signed a treaty but the Maori protested (war during 12 years). The conflict ended in the 1870s. They won independance in 1947. 5,2 million inhabitants called "Kiwi" live in NZ. The capital is Auckland. Maori culture is widely respected, they named the county Aotearoa. Rugby is NZ's favourite sport.
Promoting New Zealand NZ Tourism Office are showing beautiful landscapes to make us want to go to NZ. They are trying to promote NZ by showing part of their culture like the kiwi, food and the haka in order to attract tourists. The music chosen in the trailer is emotional and it inhences when they say that the inhabitants treat strangers as friends The goal of this ad is to increase tourism (and so money) by showing things you could only see and experience there.

Get into teams, promote new zealand Find 5 things you can do in NZ, and 3 facts about NZ you want to present. List them and present them to your classmates

Lesson

The smallest tribe of the country created the Haka 1,000 years ago to face adversity. It is impressive. It is the symbol of the triumph of life over death. It is a major part of the Maori culture. It's still performed today by the national rugby team, the All Blacks.

Lesson

New Zealand is a small country and the Haka was created to survive against their enemies. Today, the All Black's still perform because it gives them pride and strength.

You work for the website of the New Zealand Tourism Office, present the Ka Mate

Maori women (showing their) ta moko

This video is posted on https://www.newzealand.com/int/feature/ta-moko-maori-tattoo/ . Write the description.
Lesson : Ta Moko The video is about Ta Moko which is the word for Maori tattoos. They are a way to honor (mana) their ancestors, the present and the future. Tattoos were common across the Pacific but the face designs (waves and stripes) are exclusive to the Maori. There is a misbelief that Maori culture is dying but the traditions are still alive. They are tattooed with a stick with ink and with a hammer. It must hurt.
The Maori hold many traditions such as the haka. It is a dance and a chant. It gives them strength, pride, determination and confidence. Not Haka are all the same. The All Blacks' chant and dance is the Ka Mate. It is about fighting for life over death by seeking the sun.
