Theoretical Probability

Theoretical Probability

Theoretical probability is the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes in a perfect scenario.

Experimental Probability

Experimental Probability

Experimental probability is the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials conducted.

EXAMPLES

EXAMPLE 1: Rolling a Dice

If you roll a six-sided die, what is the probability of getting an even number?

Step 3

Step 4

EXAMPLE 2: Picking a Marble from a Bag

In a bag, there are 5 red marbles and 3 blue marbles. If you pick a marble without looking, what is the probability that it will be blue?

Step 1

Step 2

EXAMPLE 2: Spinning a Spinner

A spinner has 10 equal sections numbered from 1 to 10. What is the probability of landing on a number greater than 7?

P(7>)=3/10

Explanation: There are 3 numbers greater than 7 (8, 9, 10) and 10 possible outcomes in total. So, the probability is 3/10=30%.

P(7>)=(3/10)*100%=30%

Experimental Probability: Based on observed data.

MA.7.DP.2 Develop an understanding of probability. Find and compare experimental and theoretical probabilities. MA.7.DP.2.1 Determine the sample space for a simple experiment. MA.7.DP.2.3 Find the theoretical probability of an event related to a simple experiment. MA.K12.MTR.5.1 Use patterns and structure to help understand and connect mathematical concepts. ELA.K12.EE.1.1 Cite evidence to explain and justify reasoning.

Objectives:
  • Interpret the likelihood of an event occurring based on probability.
  • Compare probabilities of different events.
  • Use simulations to find experimental probabilities and compare them to theoretical probabilities.

Theoretical Probability: Based on mathematical calculations.

Subjective Probability: Based on personal belief or judgment.
