The thanksgiving play
At Scout's school, there is a thanksgiving play. Scout gets a role where she has to wear a ham costume. She messes up her lines in the play. Then when she is walking home with Jem, she gets attacked by Bob Ewell, who wants to get back at Atticus for accusing him of beating up his daughter and making him look bad in court. In the attack her costume gets ripped up, and Bob Ewell stabs himself and dies.
The court case
Atticus takes on a case defending Tim Robinson. Tim is charged with assaulting and sexually abusing Bob Ewell's daughter. Atticus uses facts and reasoning to completely prove his innocence, such as saying how Tim's left hand is mangled, and the attacker is left handed, so the attacker can't be Tim. Unfortunately though, since Tim is a black man, the Jury just says he is guilty. (because of racism)
Figurative language
To Kill a Mockingbird
An example of Irony is on page 7 when Jem meets dill and asks how old he is, and Dill says seven. This is situational irony because Dill is so small you'd think he's four. You can find an idiom when the narrator calls Miss Maudie a "chameleon lady" on page 47. On page 48 I think there is a synecdoche when the narrator says they admitted miss Maudie into their confidence. I think it is a synecdoche because they're admitting her into their circle of trust, and confidence is a part of trusting someone.
The tree with a hole
Near the Radley house, there is a tree. Scout and Jem keep finding items in the tree. One day however, Mr. Radley fills in the hole with cement, claiming the tree is dying , but Scout and Jem can tell he is lying, and the real reason is that Boo has been leaving Scout and Jem gifts in the hole in the tree.
Snow on the mountains
Mrs Dubose is an old lady who is always harassing Jem about his father. Mrs Dubose yells at Jem one day and it makes him so angry that he takes a stick and destroys her "snow-on-the-mountain" flowers. After finding out about this, Jem's father makes him read to Mrs Dubose for an entire month. Over the month, Jem finds out Mrs Dubose was suffering from an addiction, and the reading helped her. After her death, Jem is gifted a box of "snow-on-the-mountain" flowers.
