Scientific method

Objective: Review the steps of the scientific method

Skill: Creative thinking Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products or processes

Hypothesis

(then describe what you will do in the experiment)

If

Talks about the manipulated (independent) variable in the investigation.

(predict the outcome of the experiment),

then

Talks about the responding (dependent) variable in the investigation.

tells the reader how you know this will occur. (what is your reasoning, or what does the research say?)

because

Hypothesis:

Identifying variables:

Play

  • The independent variable is the variable that you are changing in your experiment.
  • You should have only one independent variable at a time so you can control it and observe the effects or results.
Example: If your question is: “What effect does the color of the light have on the growth of plants?”
  • You will be changing the color of the light.
  • The color of the light is your independent variable, and you are manipulating the color.
  • The variable that responds and is being measured is plant growth. Plant growth is your dependent variable.

Identifying variables:

Identify the variables in the research questions, and then write a hypothesis using the “If, then, because” format.

““To what extent does the oxygen dissolved in water affect the diversity of fauna in the lake?” ”

a. Independent variable/s: _____________________b. Dependent variable/s: _______________________ c. Hypothesis:____________________________________________

Identifying variables:

A dog owner wants to test how exercise affects how his dog sleeps. His hypothesis was "If my dog has more hours of exercise, then the number of hours he sleeps will increase because he used more energy exercising". He was careful to give his dog the same amount of food on the days he did the experiment. His results are in the table.

a. Independent variable/s: _____________________b. Dependent variable/s: _______________________ c. Constants:____________________________________________ d. Research Question: ______________________________________

Identifying variables:

Now it’s your turn:

Write an example of a good hypothesis for the next question: What is the effect of the mass of an object when it falls? (Heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects?) Your hypothesis: Identify the independent and dependent variables in your hypothesis: Independent variable: Dependent variable:

Answers in your notebook! (5 min)

Test your hypothesis

Do experimentation Repeat the experiment at least 3 times.

Organize, present and analyze data

Use graphs and charts Remember to include title, units, independent and dependent variables

Tutorías 24-25

Draw a conclusion

To check if your hypothesis is correct or not Based on results but also on research Here, you also check if the method was safe, complete and enough.
