CENSORSHIP - the supression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc that are considered objectionable by a person or group
Censorship & the 1st Amendment
1ST AMENDMENT- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
So what does this have to do with banning books and libraries?
Because libraries (public and school) are funded through tax payer dollars, they serve everyone, therefore everyone deserves to see themselves reflected in the collection of a public/school library. Because the 1st Amendment guarantees your freedom to access information, a public institution like a public/school library cannot censor materials that community members disagree with. You deserve access to those books. Age approrpiateness should be considered when decided if a library should hold certain titles and were they should be shelved.
An attempt to remove or restrict materials from a library based upon the objections of a person or group within a certain community
