Cylinder Phonograph
Created by Thomas Edison in 1877, the cylinder phonograph was invented to record and playback sounds. The phonograph used cylinders with metal or wax to record vertical grooves representing sound vibrations. When one would speak in the mouthpiece, the sound vibrations would be indented onto the cylinder by a recording needle allowing the wax to contain the recording of the sound.

The IPod MP3 Player, developed and sold by Apple revolutionized the way we listen to music. Released in 2001, this medium was a pivotal milestone in the history of audio. Its compact size, design, portability, and convenience caught the attention of masses and opened many doors for audio technology.

Radio
The radio was invented by an Italian named Gugliemo Marconi. He built what he called "the wireless telegraph" in his parents' attic and used radio waves to transmit Morse code. The instrument he used became known as the radio. The radio became exceedingly popular during the early 1930's and was seen as a "medium that would revolutionize education" (Reiser 5). Contrary to this belief in the following 20 years, the radio had little impact on instructional practices, however it had a lasting impact on the way we send and receive information.

Magnetic Tape Recorder
Invented by Fritz Pfleumer, a German engineer, the magnetic tape recorder transformed the way we store and reproduce sound. This invention allowed for the recording and playback of sound using magnetized tape. The way it works is an electrical signal passes through a recording head as the tape goes past, leaving a magnetic imprint on the tape's surface.
