Since its launch in 1969, PBS has been a leader in educational television, providing programs for learners of all ages. This short timeline takes readers through how the creation of PBS became possible, its foundation, and its growth over the years.
242 Educational Channels Established
In 1952, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decided to set aside 242 channels for educational purposes. This opened the door for television, which was growing rapidly at the time, to be another educational resource. Following the decision, educational channels began being established. However, many issues arose from the public, from the lack of engagement educational TV provided to teachers' reluctance to use educational television in their classrooms.
Public Broadcasting Act & Launch of PBS
In 1967, the Public Broadcasting Act was passed by Congress. This created the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which went on to launch PBS and NPR in 1969 and 1970, respectively. In the years following its launch, PBS aired programs such as Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Sesame Street, Nova, and many more instructional or documentary-like television programs.
Program, Growth, and Streaming Evolution
In the 21st century, PBS expanded their programming to include many different types of shows aimed at children, history buffs, and even fans of TV dramas. Notably, PBS began broadcasting Downton Abbey, a British drama that became very popular in the U.S.PBS has also branched out into streaming as programs can now be accessed through the PBS app, as well as Amazon Prime Video, so their content can now be streamed by anyone, anywhere.
Launch of PBS Kids
Originally launched in 1994 as PTV, PBS launched a new program with educational content exclusively for young children. PBS Kids became the channel that PTV shows would live on, and now there was a whole 24/7 channel dedicated to children-oriented instructional content. Popular, long-running shows such as Dragon Tales, Arthur, and Caillou debuted during this time.
